Direct measurements are only part of the complete Health Physics solution. Comprehensive software tools offer capabilities above and beyond the basic instrument functionality described in the other sections of this catalog. Accurate assessment of dose requires computations - both to assess actual dose to individuals and to model the dose characteristics of a particular radioactive environment for purposes of radiation protection and ALARA planning. A small investment in planning can yield a major benefit in terms or reduced dose. Instrument data needs to be constantly monitored to facilitate evacuation and other corrective action in the event of unexpected radiation levels. Instrument output needs to be recorded and managed for instrument performance and long term radiation level assessment. Worker dose records need to be maintained for site access control and regulatory compliance.
