Software and Screens for CANBERRA Personnel and Object Contamination Monitors

Software and Screens for CANBERRA Personnel and Object Contamination Monitors

This document provides a synopsis of the Monitor software Version 9.0, which enables WebRemote™ as a standard for all CANBERRA contamination monitors. WebRemote provides an ergonomic and easy-to-use touch screen graphical user interface (GUI); accessible locally or via PC or tablet web browser when a CANBERRA contamination monitor is connected to a LAN. Monitor software Version 9.0 also allows the use of the traditional interface with the keyboard and function keys. This software has evolved over many years by incorporating customers' suggestions and is now recognized as the best contamination monitor software on the market.

CANBERRA's contamination monitors can be integrated with Horizon Supervisory Software to provide an integrated solution with CANBERRA instruments. Horizon complements the functionality of the WebRemote Contamination Monitor Interface.

AccuRate™ Anthropometric Correction

AccuRate™ Anthropometric Correction

AccuRate™ Anthropometric Correction

AccuRate* is CANBERRA's patented solution that improves the performance of its current generation of gamma-sensitive whole body surface contamination monitors by correcting for the self shielding effect of an individual in the monitor. The AccuRate system enables the detection of lower levels of contamination, reduces false negatives and positives, and minimizes overall personnel monitoring effort. Its optimized analysis addresses the industry need to reduce cost, improve accuracy, and increase ALARA.

Argos-3/-5 Whole Body Contamination Monitors are used to assess surface contamination on the body of the workers. When a person is present in the portal during the monitoring cycle the gamma background can be significantly reduced because of the body's self-shielding effects.

Therefore, the gamma activity estimate is biased. Self-shielding effects can easily mask contamination levels of 5000 Bq in a 300 nGy/h (30 µR/h) background environment.

The AccuRate algorithm compensates self-shielding effects and the associated change in background count rate due to the presence of individuals inside the monitor. The algorithm enables the monitor to more accurately measure potential contamination levels.

Self-shielding varies greatly between individuals (anthropometric effect) and sites (background spectrum and spatial distribution). The site-to-site variations are taken into account through the calibration procedure which is done once, provided the background conditions are stable.

The advantage of AccuRate compared to the average correction method that can be deployed on current Argos-3/-5 monitors is its ability to correct for the self-shielding based on the actual measured anthropometrics of the subject being monitored. A large person would have an increased self-shield factor compared to the average person and thus could end up with a false negative (missed contamination). Conversely, a smaller person would have a reduced shielding effect compared to the average, increasing the probability of a false positive (false alarm).

AccuRate™ Anthropometric Correction

  • Corrects for self shielding effects of individuals in Argos-3/-5 contamination monitors
  • Easy on-site calibration
  • Can be ordered and factory installed on gamma-sensitive versions of Argos™-3/-5 monitors
  • Retrofit existing Argos-3/-5 with Zeus option or Argos-3/-5PBG monitors using the AccuRate field kit

  • Improves the accuracy of gamma contamination monitoring
  • Helps detect lower levels of contamination
  • Reduces False Negative and False Positive Rates
  • Results in better accuracy and identification of contamination within the Radiation Control Area (RCA), avoiding its spread outside the controlled area
  • Improved accuracy and sensitivity of monitoring ensures HP staff is targeted and used efficiently
  • Improved measurement accuracy contributes to meeting ALARA goals

Contamination Monitor – Local Database Option

Contamination Monitor – Local Database Option

  • Industry standard Microsoft® SQL Express Server based system for improved security and easy integration with facility database(s)
  • Extensive reporting capability (including report customization)
  • Local storage of ~40,000* complete measurement results in a SQL database
  • Easy access to local monitor data with Web Browser** accessible predefined monitoring reports which are available either at the monitor or at any authorized networked computer
  • Compatible with Argos™-3/-5, Sirius™-5, GEM™-5
(Serial Bus only) and Cronos®-4/-11 Monitors
running CANBERRA Monitor Software Version 8.01 or later and with Argos-2/-4, Sirius-2/-4 and GEM-5 (Parallel Bus) Monitors running CANBERRA Monitor Software Version 8.03 or later
  • Reports can be saved as Adobe® Acrobat® (PDF) or as MS Excel (XLS) files for simplified data storage and sharing of information

The Local Database option provides useful information at a glance to quickly monitor the effectiveness of a contamination control program.

Pre-defined database queries (reports) are provided for commonly requested information. These queries are available via Web Browser** either locally at the monitor or remotely at any authorized networked computer.
Using standard database methods/tools, the local database information can be queried for monitor data that can be folded into a corporate wide RP database for additional reporting and tracking.

The Local Database Option provides the following:

Colibri incorporates a scaler timer mode that allows user to select an integration time from 1 s to 255 s and improves MDA. It displays the number of counts for the selected period of time and the average value in selected unit.

  • Database Engine, Client Components, Management Studio Express and Reporting Services.
  • Data Access (ODBC).
  • A single local SQL database with a capacity of 4 GB.
  • Predefined Reports which are accessible locally or remotely via web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or above) or via CANBERRA's CRemote (Version 1.05 or above) application.

This brochure serves to provide a synopsis of the software that is standard to almost all CANBERRA whole body and hand and foot monitors. This software has evolved over many years by incorporating user suggestions and is now recognized as being the very best in the industry.

Data Storage

All relevant contamination monitoring data from the instrument is inserted into the database as each measurement and update is performed. This includes instrument calibration data, monitoring results, background updates, monitor service events, etc.

An automated procedure maintains the database records and dynamic tables to prevent the loss of data storage capacity and to support sustained system operation. A total of approximately ~40,000 complete measurement results are maintained in the local database. At a user specified time, or upon program startup, excess records which would hinder system operation are purged from the database, oldest first.

A daily database backup is performed after the monitor performs its daily maintenance cycle. Backups are stored on the local machine and can be manually archived remotely.

The archiving of backups requires remote storage; either a USB memory device or via an Ethernet connection to a remote drive on the LAN or a central database.

A number of predefined reports are provided with the Local Database Option. Main reports are available covering the following areas:

  • Result details over a selected period of time
  • Summary of clean/contaminated events over a period of time
  • Background trends
  • Service event list for Monitor
  • Result data for optional Argos or Sirius frisker
  • Models list supported by installed Monitor software version
  • Specifically selected model details
  • List of data based on Types and Results selected
  • Listing of factory and customer-entered calibration sources
  • Computer information history

Where additional information may be desired, a series of detail reports are also available.

The predefined CANBERRA designed reports can be accessed via a default Web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or above) on the local Contamination Monitor and/or from other computers on the LAN or
via CRemote.

The report interface allows the user to tailor the reports (e.g. measurement type, date range, etc.) and to output to an Adobe Acrobat (PDF) file or MS-Excel (XLS) file or to a local Windows® printer).

CRemote Integration

The SQL reporting feature has been directly integrated into CRemote Version 1.05 and above. An Information Choice selection button called "DB Reports" is made available to launch the default web browser to access the Reports Home Page for the selected monitor.
