Configuration Guide - RMS Detectors and Ratemeters for Area Monitoring
|
Description
The modular design
of CANBERRA’s SMART
detectors, ratemeters,
and auxiliary alarm
systems offers the
benefits of achieving
multiple setup configurations
to serve all area
radiation monitoring
needs. Optional
RADACS (Radiological
Assessment Display and
Control System)
software enables remote
radiation data management
from your PC.
Provided appropriate
security access and
network connection are
available, the radiation
monitoring data can be
viewed real-time by
third parties.
Size of the area monitoring system could vary from relatively small – composed of only a few detectors – to very large – made up of hundreds of detectors.
Large systems are typical in nuclear power plant monitoring, HLW/LLW repositories, fuel fabrication or reprocessing plants, research reactors, and university or medical labs.
More recent, radiation area monitoring systems have been successfully extended into homeland security applications where RADACS enables for fast and accurate security decision making.
Our safety qualified components are designed and built to pass seismic requirements. Testing for seismic qualification is specially performed and is based on customer provided frequency spectrum data.
This configuration guide addresses two basic radiation monitoring setups – local and remote configurations for use in safety and nonsafety applications. In the local configuration the ratemeter(s) is placed in a control room where all monitoring takes place. In a remote configuration, the additional ratemeter(s) is placed at some distance from the local one, enabling remote monitoring.
The following standard components are being used:
- SMART detectors: Ion Chamber Detectors – IP and ICP Series; Geiger Müeller Detectors – GP Series and GSP100 detector; Neutron Probes – NP Series.
- Ratemeters: Rack mount ADM606, Portable ADM606M and Wall mount ADM616.
- Auxiliary Alarm – AX302.
- RADACS – Small, Medium or Large packages, based on the number of sensors.
The specific requirements of each application will dictate the type of the SMART detectors, ratemeters, additional alarms or RADACS model needed.
There are two options in terms of raw cables – plenum or 1E rated. The plenum rated cable meets the requirements defined under UL910 code which regulates fire resistance and low-smoke characteristics. The 1E nuclear grade cable meets the requirements of IEEE 383 for nuclear power plants.
For complete specifications, please see the individual component data sheets.
The tables below identify terminated and raw cables, detectors and ratemeters with their respective connectors needed for configuring an area monitoring system. The auxiliary equipment refers to a preamplifier (PA100M) or current to frequency converter (CF300), required between some detectors and ratemeters.
