Tomography technology takes thousands of spectroscopic gamma-ray measurements of an object such as a drum and then uses complex reconstruction algorithms to develop an image of the contents.  Maps of both the material density and radioactive content of the object are created.  This powerful tool provides a more accurate assay value, which helps to ensure proper storage and disposal of radioactive waste. As this information is provided without opening the container, worker and environmental hazards are significantly minimized.

The image above shows a sectional view of wooden blocks in a “wedding cake” arrangement placed within a steel drum. The TGS produces images of both the material density distribution and the location of gamma-ray emitting materials within the container. The density images are obtained by scanning the drum with an isotopic gamma-ray source, such as Eu-152, without the need to open the waste container.
