HIS-20 System Management

Prerequisites: Familiarity with basic operating system commands, file manipulation and directory structure. Familiarity with a system text editor.

Purpose: This five-day course is designed for individuals who want to configure and maintain any Alpha/ VMS system that is used to run the HIS-20 application. It teaches how to support a Alpha/VMS system so that HIS-20 can be operated successfully. This course does not teach how to use management functions from within the HIS-20 environment, or how to maintain the database management system upon which HIS-20 runs (those concepts are taught in the HS-1105-5 course).

Description:
This course is intended for students with some previous experience with the operating system. The course is a comprehensive introduction to the maintenance of a Alpha/VMS system used to run the HIS-20 application.

The course features a review of operating system concepts that pertain to system resource control and automated procedure execution. The student will learn how to set up the user environment, control system processes, and manage system resources. Different techniques for booting, configuring peripherals, setting up queues, performing and restoring backups, installing software, and troubleshooting are thoroughly examined.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to add system users; modify system parameters; boot the system conversationally and/or from different devices; isolate system faults; perform and restore file, directory, user, system disk, and incremental backups; install software; set up the network; and write non-trivial command files which automate many HIS-20 system functions and system maintenance duties.
