Description
The Cryo-Pulse® 5 is an electrically powered cryostat for use with germanium and silicon radiation detectors. It utilizes a pulse-tube cooler which is a relatively new concept in cryogenic coolers.
The pulse-tube cooler is similar in many respects to Stirling coolers which have been used for decades – particularly in weapons systems (cooling infrared detectors). The Stirling cooler has a compressor stage coupled to a heat exchanger in which there is a physical displacer that moves the compressed gas to effect the cooling cycle. With exacting precision these coolers can be manufactured in such a way as to avoid contact (and thus wear) between the mating surfaces. In the case of the pulse-tube cooler, however, the cold head displacer is eliminated and the gas is moved by oscillating “pressure wave”. This innovation eliminates any possibility of wear in the cold head and thus makes for a long-life cooler. The predicted life of the Cryo-Pulse 5 is greater than five years.
The Cryo-Pulse 5 compressor has opposing twin pistons that move in phase with each other. This arrangement provides inherent vibration cancellation which, along with a cold head with no moving parts, leads to a virtually vibration-less cooling system. This means that there is little or no resolution degradation even with the most sensitive of detector types.
The refrigerant used in the Cryo-Pulse 5 is pure helium – both CFC-free and non-flammable. The cooler has metal seals – no elastomers – and no electrical feedthroughs which are subject to damage or failure. Also there are no filters involved so expensive periodic service is not necessary. The compressor coils are located outside the helium environment eliminating potential contamination from electrical wiring and insulation.
The Cryo-Pulse 5 comes with a bench-top power controller that produces the controlled ac voltage to drive the compressor and to regulate the temperature. This power controller operates on 100 V, 115 V or 220–240 V, 50 or 60 Hz.
Because the compressor and cold head are packaged together, there is no need for flexible metal hoses and their complementary fittings. Because of limited flex life and seal failures, hoses have caused reliability problems with other cooler technologies. The Cryo-Pulse 5 is all attitude. Since no lubricating oil is used in the compressor or cold head, the unit does not have to be shipped upright or allowed to settle after shipment, nor is there a problem of oil clogging in the cold head with long term operation.
The Cryo-Pulse 5 is a premium product which is designed for high performance and long life using the very best available technology. This is the cooler of choice for applications where performance, size, efficiency, and safety are of paramount importance.
