Prerequisites:

This course is intended for individuals who possess some prior knowledge of gamma spectroscopy theory and measurement methodology. Also, it is assumed that students are already familiar with the basic operations of CANBERRA’s Apex and/or Genie-2000 software products. Prior participation in CANBERRA’s SU-470-4 Basic Genie-2000 training course (or equivalent experience) is strongly recommended.

Purpose:

This training course will discuss CANBERRA's LabSOCS mathematical efficiency calibration software and its use within the standard Genie-2000 software environment. In addition, specific recommendations will be provided for use of the Cascade Summing Correction feature that can be enabled during the sample analysis process.

Description:

Lecture and discussion topics will include: use of the Geometry Composer interface, typical applications of the standard LabSOCS sample geometry templates, tips for proper template parameter entry, and use of the Materials Library editor. Various sample geometries (e.g., paper disk, charcoal-filled air filter cartridge, polyethylene bottle, and Marinelli beaker) will be selected as practical examples to demonstrate the complete LabSOCS efficiency calibration process, including: selecting a specific LabSOCS geometry template, entering all required geometry parameter values, viewing the Geometry Composer report, generating the efficiency data points, creating an efficiency calibration file, and proper use of this calibration file during spectral analyses. Cascade summing corrections will be discussed as a method to optimize the results for traditional efficiency calibrations (performed using radioactive calibration sources), and to improve the accuracy of nuclide activity calculations during routine sample analyses.
