Description

The CANBERRA Cryo-JT cryocooler is an electrically powered cryostat for use with germanium and silicon radiation detectors. It utilizes Joule-Thomson cooler technology providing an economical solution compared to other high-end coolers available from CANBERRA.

This cooler offers low-maintenance and ease of use in a variety of applications that have typically been served by conventional Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) cryostats, but with lower cost of operation compared to LN2 systems. The Cryo-JT consists of a cold head and detector chamber assembly coupled with flexible refrigerant gas lines to an air cooled compressor. It uses a non-flammable/CFC-free mixed gas.

The cold head contains no moving parts, providing low noise, low maintenance and long service life. Its small size and all-attitude operation make it easy to use. Both flange and Slimline detector chamber configurations are available. The cold head /detector chamber includes a detachable carrier.

Because the compressor is remote from the cold head, heat, noise and vibration in the operating environment are minimized. This next-generation Joule-Thomson cooler includes an improved oil separator and a built-in filter/ dryer to prevent interruptions in the cooling cycle. We recommend a two-year service interval for filter/dryer replacement.

The compressor is attached to the cold head by means of flexible gas refrigerant lines that have self-sealing fittings. These fittings allow the cold head to be detached from the compressor for shipment, installation, or service. Standard lines are 3.3 m (10 ft) long and have a straight fitting on one end and a right angle fitting on the other. The right angle fitting can be installed at either the compressor or the cold head providing versatility in setup for various applications. Optional lines are available in lengths of 7.6 m (25 ft) and 15.2 m (50 ft). (See "Cryo-JT Options" on the Cryo-JT Product Specification Sheet.)

Most CANBERRA detectors up to 100% relative efficiency are compatible with the Cryo-JT. We guarantee the peak energy resolution as specified by the detector model at 1332 keV (60Co). However there is a possibility of up to 10% variance in performance below 500 keV. The Cryo-JT can operate in ambient temperatures of 15-35 °C (59-95 °F). Ambient temperature variations will lead to changes in detector temperature that can cause gain changes, therefore the operating ambient temperatures should be controlled for best results. Gain stability is typically around 100 ppm/°C.

The compressor is available in 120 V ac or 220 V ac versions. A power controller is available as an accessory to provide automatic restart if power is lost for no more than 20 minutes' duration.

An evacuation kit is available. It provides all the tools and equipment necessary to maintain vacuum integrity for long-term operation.
