Description
GPS-COM helps responders who use the UltraRadiac to stay focused on their primary task: rescuing life, fighting a fire, protecting the population, while sending dose-rate and GIS information to the host system. Indeed, although UltraRadiac features a vibrating and a loud audible alarm, first responders might not react to the radiation hazard because they are distracted by the primary danger (fire, accident, explosion, dust,...).
GPS-COM updates every UltraRadiac being used in the field without the need to send it back to the factory for upgrade. The hot shoe design allows users to grab any GPS-COM and place the UltraRadiac in to be ready on the go. Simply turn on both instruments while deploying the Supervisor with as many Repeaters as needed (up to 4) to expand the lines of communication and start gathering all UltraRadiac data in the field. Each displayed unit is shown on the remote software in less than 15 minutes.
GPS-COM-SW software shows all GPS-COM data on a laptop screen (map or data list mode) with colored alarm levels for each connected unit and stores data for later review.
A typical configuration is made of up to 100 GPS-COM with UltraRadiac, one Supervisor, GPS-COM-SW software loaded on a laptop and, optionally, up to four Repeaters.
The line of communication can be extended (up to 25 km - 15 miles in open areas) without turning down the system by simply adding one new repeater in the chain, and if any new screening material is added into the scene or if the host is moved to a different location, the system will automatically look for the most powerful way to ensure the best route to data gathering.
GPS-COM is based on a hot shoe design to accept one UltraRadiac without any specific upgrade. It includes an infrared link to communicate with the UltraRadiac and periodically receives (from 2 to 20 seconds depending on GPS-COM fleet in the network) dose-rate, alarm condition (low or high rate, and/or low or high dose) and stay time (time to high dose alarm). The internal GPS provides position coordinates that are attached to radiation measurement and GPS-COM sends the global information via RF to the Supervisor.
GPS-COM operates with a Li-ion rechargeable battery, thus reducing battery disposal issues. The battery has no memory effect and can be recharged without cycling the power down, assuring that GPS-COM is always 100% ready for use.
A locking mechanism secures UltraRadiac in the correct position and a long clip on the back of the instrument attaches securely to turn out gear.
The control panel, located on the side of the instrument, gives access to the power button, battery level (green, orange, red LED) and communication status (blue LED).
Once GPS-COM is powered on, it automatically turns UltraRadiac into monitoring mode via the IrDA link and is set up using the correct data string item, thus reducing the risk of bad communication if UltraRadiac was previously used with a different setup.
A connector, located at the bottom of the unit, accepts external power from the AC/DC adapter to charge the GPS-COM internal battery.
SUPERVISOR/REPEATER (S/R)
The line of communication is guaranteed by one Supervisor with up to four optional Repeaters. Supervisor and Repeater are identical units and the operating mode is selected by pressing the front panel S/R button, making the deployment very simple and error free.

The control panel includes the battery level (green, orange, red LED) and communication status (blue LED). A connector, located on the left of the control panel, accepts external power from the AC/DC adapter to charge the S/R internal battery. A data connector located on the right of the control panel is dedicated to a PC connection.
The bottom of the S/R is equipped with a tripod mount (threaded insert) and three magnetic feet to allow the module to be magnetically mounted to most common steel or other ferromagnetic structures. It is easily carried into the field with the top handle.
GPS-COM-SW software
GPS-COM-SW displays all GPS-COM on an active map if GPS signal is available (outside buildings) and/or in a list, depending on each unit's specifics:
- All units defined in the network, regardless of operating status
- Active: units supplying both measurement and GPS position data
- No GPS: units supplying measurement data but no valid GPS position data
- Fault: units supplying GPS position data but no measurement data (i.e. UltraRadiac off)
- Inactive: units not supplying any measurement or GPS data (i.e. GPS-COM off or out of range)
Each record is saved in the database for later review. When a GPS-COM/UltraRadiac turns off an alarm, it is immediately reported on the map and/or data list with the right color: yellow for low alarm and red for high alarm.
This information can be assigned to a user name while in use or during the review process. The review screen includes two specific displays: a map or a data list selected via a tab:
The user can define a specific Date/Time range and list all GPS-COM with available data. After selecting the unit of interest, he can navigate automatically or manually with the control buttons to move forward and backward and display each dose-rate with alarm conditions
