Description
CINDY software can provide all of the dose calculations and bioassay projections you need to meet today's stringent internal dosimetry requirements.
Developed by researchers at Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratories, CINDY was designed specifically to meet the requirements of DOE Order 5480.11, 10 CFR 20, and the recommendations of the ICRP. Through a technology transfer agreement with Battelle PNL, CINDY is now available from, and offered with worldwide support by, CANBERRA.
Why Do You Need CINDY?
Even if uptakes and doses are very low, they still should be reported accurately. It takes more than a simplistic estimate based upon the Reference Man and some intake-to-dose conversion factors if you want reliable, accurate results. While many regulatory agencies will accept such simple estimates as confirmation that no regulations have been violated, is "good enough" really an acceptable answer?
These estimation techniques simply cannot give you accurate results. In fact, unless all of your subjects are Reference Men, all particles are 1 micron in diameter, and everyone's bodily retention follows the exact same model, these estimate are usually (but not always) too high.
There is a better way: let CINDY do it. Enter your bioassay data, then choose the best biokinetic model and parameters for your site and subjects. Using these, CINDY will calculate the most accurate dose possible. In today's legal and regulatory climate, isn't this exactly what you need?

What Does CINDY Do?
CINDY starts with the bioassay data that you are already acquiring: whole body counts, specific organ depositions, excretion counts, wound activity, and the like. These data are then processed through biokinetic models to generate intake assessments, dose assessments, and bioassay projections. The results are then displayed, printed, and/or stored on disk for future reference.
How Is This Done?
To do this job, CINDY comes with 15 standard biokinetic models, including ICRP 20, 30, and 54. These models describe the process of intake, translocation, metabolism, and elimination of radionuclides. Most of the parameters can be custom-tailored to meet site and subject-specific needs. The LSODES numerical equation solving package developed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, with user-selected error tolerances, insures precise solutions to the models. The result is complete flexibility plus the greatest possible accuracy for all of your internal dose calculations.
What Are CINDY's Qualifications?
In addition to having proven technical capabilities, CINDY was also developed under all of the quality assurance requirements of ANSI/ASME NQA-1 (1983) and meets DOE 1330.1C 1360.4A for scientific software management, quality assurance, and distribution. This means that CINDY's functions have been thoroughly tested, verified, and validated, insuring you of accurate, repeatable, and defensible results. For example, as part of the validation process a data base of several hundred internal exposure cases was developed from the literature and hypothetical cases. CINDY's results compared very closely with the published or manually calculated results for those cases.
More than 85 DOE and government users have beta tested CINDY and their testing proved that CINDY was a valuable aid in meeting their internal dosimetry needs.
CINDY Makes Internal Dosimetry Easy to Do
Install CINDY on any Intel Pentium PC running Windows® 2000, and the result is a user-friendly system tailored to meeting the internal dosimetry requirements of 10 CFR 20, DOE 5480.11, and the recommendations of the ICRP.
While the models and the mathematics needed to meet those requirements are complicated, CINDY isn't. Simple pop-up menus guide you through each step.
To help you better understand CINDY, the package includes complete user and technical documentation, a certificate for a three day training course, an on-line tutorial with examples, and eight hours of consulting on internal dosimetry situations with one of CANBERRA's Health Physics professionals.
CINDY Includes Four Analysis Modes

There are four intake modes, and each
may be Chronic or Acute.
CINDY has four different analysis modes which can be used:
- Intake Assessment - Estimates intake based upon bioassay data using weighted or unweighted least squares regression between measured and expected bioassay values.
- Dose Assessment for Specified Time Periods - Estimates organ dose equivalents, effective dose equivalents, and committed dose equivalents for specified time periods (e.g. 50 years).
- Dose Assessment for Calendar Year Doses - Estimates organ and effective dose equivalents for the remainder of the current calendar year and future annual increments.
- Bioassay Projection Mode - Estimates future organ burdens and urinary and fecal excretion rates.

CINDY uses simple Pop-up Menus.
CINDY Provides Four Intake Modes
CINDY's intake modes include Inhalation, Ingestion, Wound Absorption, and Skin Absorption. The intakes may be either Chronic or Acute. Any or all of the modes can be used simultaneously to calculate the uptake and internal dose.
The bioassay data may be from Whole Body Counts, Lung, Thyroid, and Skeleton Deposition Counts, Urinary and Fecal Excretion Counts, and/or Wound Activity. It can be entered on-line or from subject-specific ASCII files on disk.
This information, plus isotopic data from a library currently containing 222 entries, are the inputs to CINDY's biokinetic models.
CINDY Includes 15 Biokinetic Models
Biokinetic modeling is the key to accurate internal dose assessment, and with CINDY you get a choice of 15 different models. The models are initially set up to use default values based upon ICRP recommendation. To insure maximum accuracy, the coefficients used in most models can be tailored to accommodate site and subject-specific needs. The models included are:
Respiratory Tract Model
- ICRP 30 lung model
Gastrointestinal Tract Model
- ICRP GI-tract model
Direct Uptake Model
- Multicompartment presystemic deposition model
Systemic Organ Models
- General ICRP model (per ICRP 30 and updates)
- Johnson Alkaline Earth model using ICRP 20 data
- Radium/Radon model
- Tritium models (ICRP; Johnson; Johnson and Dunford)
- Carbon model (ICRP 30)
- Tellurium/Iodine model
- Fisher modified Wrenn-Lipzstein model for Uranium
- Wrenn-Lipzstein model for Uranium
- Iodine (ICRP-54)
Excretion Models
- ICRP 54 excretion functions model
- ICRP 30 default systemic retention model (used when excretion functions are not provided)
- Jones Plutonium excretion model
- Durbin Plutonium excretion model
- Tritium Excretion model

CINDY includes the details of 15 different biokinetic models.
CINDY Uses Statistical Intake Analysis Methods
For the intake analysis CINDY performs a linear regression using least-squares methods:
- Unweighted Least-squares.
- Ratio of the Means.
- Average of the Slopes.
- User-defined Weighting Factors.
For precise solutions to the differential equations which are used in the biokinetic models, the LSODES package from the ODEPACK collection (developed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) is used.
For all of these analyses, both graphical and numerical results can be displayed and printed.
CINDY Includes a Comprehensive Report Generation Facility
CINDY's report generation facility is as impressive as the analytical capabilities. Not only is there a wide range to choose from, but each can be previewed on the monitor before it's printed.
Among the available reports you'll find:
- Intake Assessment Reports
These reports include bioassay estimates, quantities in organs, excretion rates, expected/observed measurement ratios for each bioassay datum, and percent contribution by intake component for each bioassay datum.
- Dose Assessment Reports
Included here are - for both specified time periods and calendar year - effective dose equivalent summarization, committed dose equivalent to each organ or tissue, specific effective energies for each explicit radionuclide chain member, and number of nuclear transformations in source organs per unit uptake. Reports are also available in a format consistent with NRC Form 4/5.
- Bioassay Projection Reports
In this group are excretion rates and organ retention values for each time point for urine, feces, total body, lungs, stomach, small intestines, upper-large intestine, lower-large intestines, lymph nodes, bone volume or surface, and specified organs, as appropriate.
- General Reports
These reports are applicable to all analysis modes and include site configuration, assumptions, parameters, subject identification, bioassay data, dates, facility identification, and signature blocks.
In addition to the display preview and hard copy, all report data can also be stored on disk for later recall as needed.
