INTRODUCTION

Industry requirements today call for increasing attention to the integrity of the spectroscopy system. Environmental and Health Physics applications often call for very high sample throughput, while retaining extensive system performance and sample tracking records. System throughput and counting capacity must be retained at all times - while system quality must be assured to satisfy a myriad of regulatory authorities. Safeguards and waste assessment applications are additionally complicated by the need to take measurements in high radiation fields without exposing workers to unacceptable dose levels.

CANBERRA's network based signal processing subsystems meet these data security/availability and distributed system requirements. Available only on Genie™ Family systems, the Acquisition Interface Module with its local Instrument Control Bus (ICB) offers the ability to position detectors anywhere - while extending the reach of the host computer(s) all the way through the signal processing subsystem.

The heart of CANBERRA's advanced signal processing subsystem is the Model 556A Acquisition Interface Module or AIM (see Multichannel and Digital Signal Analyzers Section). The AIM is essentially a 64K channel, two-input Multichannel Analyzer designed to connect directly to an Ethernet Network. Complying with IEEE 802.3 and 802.4, the AIM allows the entire acquisition subsystem, MCA and signal processing, to be placed directly on a network.
