Genie VMS System Management Course

Prerequisites: SU-430-5, SU-432-4 or equivalent, and familiarity with a VMS text editor.

Purpose: This course is designed for individuals who want to configure and maintain any Genie, Genie Workstation, X:Genie, Genie-ESP spectroscopy, or AbacosPLUS system.

Description:
This course is intended for students with some previous experience with VMS, AbacosPLUS, or Genie spectroscopy systems. The course is a comprehensive introduction to the maintenance of a VAX/VMS system running Genie spectroscopy applications and acquiring data via a remote, integrated, or networked MCA.

The course features a review of VMS concepts that pertain to system resource control and automated procedure execution. The student will learn how to set up the user environment, control system processes, and manage system resources. Different techniques for booting, configuring peripherals, setting up queues, performing and restoring backups, installing software, and troubleshooting are thoroughly examined.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to add system users; modify system parameters; boot the system conversationally or from different devices; isolate system faults; perform and restore file, directory, user, system disk and incremental backups; install software; customize Genie software utilities; set up a DECnet network; and write non-trivial automating procedures which automate many counting system functions and system maintenance duties.
