Advanced INGRES Database Management Course for CDM/EMS

Prerequisites:

  1. Familiarity with VMS, a VMS text editor and operational experience using CDM or EMS.
  2. SA-816-3 course.

Purpose: This course provides the user of CANBERRA's Chemistry Data Management (CDM) or Effluent Management System (EMS) relational database application packages with the knowledge and practical experience necessary to effectively use and manage the packages. It is intended for end users, application specialists, and database administrators who desire a better understanding of how to use and manage the INGRES relational database system.

Description:
This is an intensive one week course which requires active student participation. Due to the amount of material covered and hands-on exercises to be performed each day, some after-hours course work ("homework") will be required. The prerequisites must be satisfied because the course covers training material from other pertinent courses which, if combined, would require three or four weeks of introductory instruction.

The course provides the user with a "behind-the-scenes" look at CANBERRA's CDM and EMS software packages. The student will become familiar with the tools available for managing the INGRES relational database and optimizing system performance.

The first part of the course introduces the user to the structures of the CDM and EMS databases, and covers the use of the INGRES forms-based utilities to selectively retrieve, modify and report data kept in the CDM and EMS databases.

The second part of the course discusses and demonstrates more advanced techniques for data retrieval/modification/reporting, database management, recovering corrupted databases, and maintaining optimal database performance.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should understand how INGRES is executed on a VAX system and know what data tables are employed by CDM/EMS. The student should also be able to create custom data and query screens and reports; retrieve, modify and display data; checkpoint, journal, backup and restore the database; and optimize system performance.
